Some insurance companies cover 50% of fertility expenses. Mine covers ZERO. For fertility testing - your doctor will ask you questions about your methods of trying to conceive. (Do you use ovulation tests? Do you chart your cycle? etc) You will have a vaginal exam. You will probably be asked to come in on day 3 of your next period to test your hormone levels. He/she will probably have you start something like chlomid (a pill) which will help you to ovulate regularly. After that, you may have to move on to a specialist — and THAT is where it gets expensive. Everything I’ve mentioned up to here is probably covered. In order to see a specialist, you will have to have HIV and STD tests and send over the results of your exam, hormone tests, etc. You are right, they’d probably begin with IUI. Note — fertility treatments are very expensive and mentally and emotionally challenging. This should be your absolute last resort. See if your regular gyno can give you tips or medications for ovulating, intercourse, etc. Good luck.
