A laparoscopy is a non-evasive procedure performed using a laser to look at your insides. Basically, the doctor makes 3-4 but most times just 3 incisions on your lower abdomen. One will go in your belly button, the other right above the pubic bone, and the other on your right side right above or near your ovary. They go in with a scope and fill you up with gas so your belly expands and they have room to maneuver in there. They will then go to the trouble area, yours being blocked fallopian tubes, and fix it using a laser they can attach to the probe. This surgery can be painful only because your stomach is so bloated with the gas they put in you. I don’t know if you have ever gone more then a couple of days with out having a bowel movement or just massive bloating from gas but it’s like that times 10.

I had this procedure done in June of 08. I had mine done more for exploratory purposes but it’s the same procedure either way. I had mine done to look for any cysts on my ovaries and possible endometriosis. The doctor found a cyst, removed it, and then said she found nothing else. Turns out, after a colonoscopy, which completely turned me off to anything with a "scopy" after it, she completely missed the fact that I had a severely twisted, tortuous, and spastic colon! Being that she missed that, my primary doctor is absolutely convinced that my OBGYN didn’t look hard enough and he wants me to have another laparoscopy done!

My issues are severe chronic pain in my lower abdomen and I like never go to the bathroom. I do get cysts that are painful but I show textbook signs of endometriosis. I’m in pain all the time in the area of my baby makers so any thing extra going on in that area kills me. Like, during my period, I’m in immense pain and if I get even one tiny gas bubble? MY GOD. The pain is disabling. So, that being said, the procedure’s gas may not be so painful for you and was only painful to me because of my condition. I just know that when I woke up I started to scream bloody murder it hurt so bad.

Because I was living in New Mexico at the time (every doctor was horrible except one) they always sent me a copy of the bill that also went to my insurance company. My bill for the procedure was approximately $6,000 and I’m almost 99% positive that included everything (anesthetizing, antibiotics, and my demerol drip). Now, New Mexico is one of the poorest states in U.S. so it may be more where you live. Unless you live in NM. We aren’t given that info here in Yahoo! Answers.

Well, good luck, you’ll be just fine. Make sure you keep a close eye on the surgical sites so you can avoid infection. They, at least mine didn’t, don’t use stitches to close the openings used to probe. I think they use a liquid band aid and, given the location of the wounds, it’s kind of hard for the one in the belly button to heal.

Hope all goes well with you. If you have anymore questions or feel like you need to talk with someone you can email me at krystalroberts27@yahoo.com

    Hi,
I have had two done, 1st in March of 07 and the 2nd in August of 09.
I have pcos so i have had cysts removed etc.
I had 3 incisions, belly-button, top of pubic bone and on the right side near where i presume an ovary is? It was a day proceedure, i had it done Monday and was back at work by Friday.
In Australia it costs nothing. Hope this helps!
