The first appointment is usually a consultation. They will review your tests, your medical history, your family history, that of your partner, semen analysis for him . . . and they may want to do some of their own testing. They will then go over the options for treatment. You might have a second appointment after any testing they want to review your results and go over treatments.

IUI is not something that you can walk right in and do - it needs to start from Day 1 of your cycle. Most doctors will want to monitor you via bloodwork and ultrasounds especially if they do a medicated IUI with Clomid or injectibles. Then they have to wait for the follicles to grow to a certain level so that you are near ovulation (or do a trigger shot to cause ovulation) and then they will do the IUI. I would not expect to start this from your first appointment.

Sorry to hear about the wait - but it will be worth it in the end!

Good luck and loads of baby dust to you!

Tina is 100% right. Just went to see mine for the first time. I was a bit ok alot disappointed. I had just done all the blood work and tests for my ob/gyn and now I have to do them ALL over. Ugg. Really want a baby but not sure if I want to do all the tests over. He said he wanted to retest because things can "change" and thinks maybe thats why the Clomid didnt work for me…
2 months is crazy to wait for a doctor, I would look for a different one.

We got in to the specialist literally on the day my period started, so it was too late to start IUI for this cycle. One more cycle of TTC naturally. If there is any other doctor available, it might be worth calling to try to get in earlier. In our case the OB had only checked whether I was ovulating and my husband’s sperm count. I went to the first visit with the specialist last week. He went over the sperm count results and gave some suggestions to improve those results (my husband was told to ask the doctor if he could get off his cholesterol medications, after which he said we may see an improvement in 6 weeks, and he recommended vitamins C and E, which my husband already takes). He also had me go in for the HSG, which I did yesterday. I go back to his nurse next week, and get taught how to use the pen to prepare for IUI (I’m going to be on injectibles rather than Clomid, though, so you may not have to learn how to use an injection pen). I believe he said I will need to start injecting myself every evening beginning on day 2 of my next cycle (if I have one: keep your fingers crossed that I conceive naturally this month). I’ll find out more next week.
