Tubal abnormalities can block sperm migrating to the egg, or even the fertilized egg traveling to the uterus for implantation. Sometimes with an HSG (dye test) if the tubes are just scarred, and not indeed blocked, the test will not reveal that. Scarring can lead to a tubal pregnancy. If they are not blocked, then that's one thing that can be ruled out as far as TTC. Good luck to you, and I wish you all the luck in the world!
You are diagnosed with “unexplained infertility” if you haven’t gotten pregnant with normal ovulation, normal age, nprmal sperm count, and open tubes.
Unexplained infertility (the failure to conceive of a couple in whom no definitive cause for infertility can be found) has an incidence of 10-20% in all infertile couples. The incidence varies with the population studied and with the criteria used.
If they are not blocked . . . you would have the diagnosis of unexplained infertility. If you have not already, they may recommend an IUI perhaps with fertility meds to create a stronger ovulation or the release of multiple eggs. This is a good treatment if the tubes are not blocked.
As to whether or not you can do IVF . . . I guess it depends on whether or not you are ready, your doctor’s philosphy and if you have insurance coverage, the requirements of your insurance company.
DH and I were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. After 3 Clomid IUI cycles and 3 injectible fertility med IUI cycles - all unsuccessful except for one chemical pregnancy, we moved onto IVF and I had my twins on August 26, 2008.
