The monitor is more expensive (in my opinion well worth the cost). It tells you when to pee on a stick so there is no guessing. It also gives you a 1-5 day notice of "high" fertility (when your estrogen is rising) and then 2 "peak" days (LH surge noted indicating ovulation in 24-36 hours away.) Then, it alerts you around the time you are to start your period…if you do not, you can take a test. It interprets all data for you so it is dumby proof.
I have only used the ovulation kits one time so I have less experience but here is what I got out of it. They look like pregnancy tests. You guesstimate when you will ovulate and start peeing on sticks. On the day of ovulation the test line will be darker than the control line ( I found this very hard to tell when they were the same or darker than). These are less expensive but have more room for error.
I am biased b/c I love my monitor and I think all TTC'ers should have one! I was in need of it b/c crazy cycles and 2 miscarriages so it has worked out well for me. I did get pregnant first month I used it although that sadly ended in m/c. I will start trying again in March so I will keep everyone posted if I have good luck with it again.
